Calculation of Capacitances of Windings of High Voltage Power Transformers

Lumped circuit models are usually applied in analysis of fast transients in high voltage power transformers. Capacitances in such models are usually calculated on the basis of simple analytical parallel-plate or cylindrical approximations. This paper presents the application of the numerical approach, which is based on the boundary element method (BEM) to calculation of capacitances. Two-dimensional axially symmetric mathematical model of electric field in transformer based on integral equations is introduced, and the application of BEM to solution of these equations is explained. The applicability of the proposed approach is illustrated by an example.
