"Teacher, Please, Can you me Give your Pen?": A Cross-sectional Study of Croatian Elementary School Students’ Interlanguage Pragmatic Development
This paper reports the results of a cross-sectional study of pragmatic development among five groups of Croatian elementary school students (aged 10 to 14). Data were collected using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) designed to elicit requests, with scenarios formulated through exemplar generation and metapragmatic assessment. Data were transcribed and analysed using the coding scheme developed by Blum-Kulka et al. (1989) and adapted by Rose (2000 ; 2009). Results regarding pragmalinguistic development have shown to be rather inconclusive, particularly in the students’ choice of a request strategy. The results also provide little evidence of sociopragmatic variation, other than the increased use of alerters in hearer-dominant situations.
