Mechanochemical Synthesis of Zinc and Cadmium Metal-Organic Frameworks – The Story of Dimensionality and Solid-State Reactivity

Mechanical treatment of chemicals by simply grinding them together in a ball mill has been identified as a clean and environmentally-friendly synthetic methodology that meets the requirements of green chemistry (1). As such, mechanochemistry has recently opened new opportunities for the design and construction of new materials, e.g. coordination polymers, pharmaceutical derivatives and porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (2). We envisage that, in combination with modern solid-state analytical methods, automated ball-milling can provide an almost entirely solvent-free route from the synthesis and analysis to the full structural characterisation of a product. In this contribution we present a mechanochemical approach for the selective synthesis of simple metal-organic frameworks. Solid-state methodology based on the concept of liquid-assisted grinding (LAG) (3) allows a rapid screening for different stoichiometric compositions of MOFs with cyanoguanidine as a heteroditopic ligand (4). The products obtained by mechanosynthesis have been further characterised by solid-state analytical tools such as FTIR-ATR, solid-state NMR and structure solution from X-ray powder diffraction data, eliminating the need for bulk solvents in our research laboratory.
