Breath holding index and arterial stiffness in evaluation of stroke risk in diabetic patients
The aim of the study was to evaluate role of breath holding index (BHI) as functional parameter for intracranial subclinical atherosclerotic changes and arterial stiffness (AS) as marker for extracranial atherosclerosis changes in diabetic patients with well and poor controlled glucose blood values in correlation with healthy population. We included 60 volunteers divided into 3 aged standardized groups-healthy volunteers, well regulated diabetes, and poor controlled diabetes. We excluded individuals with moderate and severe carotid stenosis. There was decreasing trend in mean blood flow velocities of the intracranial blood vessels and increase of the arterial stiffness (BHI/AS correlation coefficient -0, 7) due to poorly regulated glucose levels (p<0, 05). Results of our study show that BHI test and arterial stiffens could be subclinical markers in recognizing diabetic patients who are at increased risk for cerebrovascular disease.
