Optimization of teamwork in tree-length harvesting

Tree-length and half-tree harvesting of wood has been carried out by teamwork in Croatia for some thirty years now. Teamwork means the simultaneous work of cutters at the felling site, tractor skidding and cutters at the roadside landing. Daily output of the team depends on the synchronization of production possibilities of its individual members. To achieve maximum possible productivity of the team, it is necessary to optimize the number of its members based on standard time. The consumption of effective time and allowance time of cutters at the felling site, tractor skidding and cutters at the roadside landing were determined by field investigations. The dependence of standard time of cutters at the felling site on diameter at breast height of the average marked tree and the dependence of standard time of tractor skidding on the average skidding distance were expressed by mathematical formulae. The average standard time of cutters at the landing was calculated. The optimization of the team size was made in reference to the team member with the lowest standard time and with respect to the team member with the highest cost per unit. The formula is presented for calculating the optimum number of cutters at the felling site with which the skidder may achieve its maximum daily output by inserting the diameter at breast height of the average marked tree and the average skidding distance.
