GPS Positioning Performance in Urban Environment
The paper analyses GPS signal propagation and positioning performance in the urban environment. A typical urban location was selected as a test location, and an experiment was conducted to analyse the positioning quality during a longer period. The most noticeable problem in urban environment is the availability of sufficient number of GPS satellites necessary for the receiver to obtain positioning fix, and the positioning error due to the multipath signal propagation. These problems were observed and analysed in our research. It was observed that during the presence of a multipath signal, positioning error becomes several tenths of meters, moving positioning fix in one direction, which depends on the geometry of the reflective surface, satellite position and the test point.
