ANTIMICROBIAL PROTECTION OF COTTON SOCKS – THE INFULENCE ON SOCK ADSORPTION AND HAND

Textiles are an excellent substrate for bacterial growth under appropriate moisture and temperature conditions. Although strange a little, it has been proved that white coats in hospitals are able to spread infections. Besides trends that promote healthier and active lifestyle, different skin diseases, e.g. diabetic foot, rapidly increase development of antimicrobial agents and treatments. Such treated materials give freshness and sense of security but all available agents are not dermatological acceptable. Angel tim company from Samobor, Croatia, has long tradition of socks production for male, female children baby and special purposes. Regarding their mission “product quality cotton sock from ecological dyed cotton“ in this paper antimicrobial efficiency of male socks was investigated. Antimicrobial protection applying male socks made from modified cotton yarn by natural minerals and active carbon to Gram positive and Gram negative was researched. Protection of Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram negative (Klebsiella pneumoniae) microorganisms was determined according to EN ISO 20645:2004, and of micro fungi (Candida albicans) according to EN 14119:2003. The influence of this application on socks hand and adsorption properties was investigated, as well.
