Vertical distribution of Chironomidae larvae in the karstic travertine barrage Lake Visovac, Croatia
From April 1995. to October 1996. the benthic community of the karstic Lake Visovac, was studied with special reference to chironomids. By origin, Lake Visovac is travertine barrage lake, and pertains to the solution lakes. It is situated in the south of Croatia, 22 km far from the Adriatic coast, in the "Krka" National Park. Samples were taken along a transect from 0.5 to a maximum of 24 meters. The distribution patterns of chironomids was examined mainly by water depth, substrate type and available food. Species richness and abundance were highest at 4-5 meters depth. Collector-gatherers was the dominant feeding group, and Paratanytarsus lauterborni (Kieff.), Chironomus gr. plumosus L. and Micropsectra praecox (Meig.) were the most abundant species. Among predators, which were distributed at all depths, Procladius choreus (Meig.) dominated.
