Prediction of shrinkage of high strength concrete
The shrinkage of concrete depends on many factors: concrete composition, relative environmental humidity, size and shape of the concrete element exposed to environmental impact, curing conditions, age of concrete at the start of drying. Predictions of time-dependent deformations are even more complicated in case of high-strength and/or high-performance concrete which is usually made by adding various mineral and chemical admixtures. According to the Eurocode 2 model (CEB MC90 model), it is assumed that the shrinkage and creep of concrete with higher strength are smaller than the ones of ordinary concrete. This is true in case when higher concrete strength is achieved by decreasing the water amount. However, when higher concrete strength is achieved by increasing the cement amount for the same water quantity, influence of the higher volume of cement stone has not been taken into account. This paper presents the results of concrete shrinkage testing obtained within the frame of five research projects. Shrinkage was tested on more than 150 ordinary and high-strength concrete specimens. Based on experimental results, certain modifications of Eurocode 2 and B3 models are proposed in order to improve their precision.
