Social History and Everyday Life of Popolani in Medieval Split: a Model of Artisans in the Mid-Fifteenth Century
This work in progress is actually Ph.D thesis which will be presented at the Faculty of Croatian Studies at University of Zagreb, Croatia. Its main goal is to explore the social structure and the economic standard of popolani in medieval Split, especially in the context of the new Venetian administration at the beginning of 15th century. The focus of our interest will be a social group of artisans who, as written sources show, played a major role in the life of medieval urban community. We find them as the main characters of many contracts, testaments, inventories and other notar documents that are kept at Zadar National Archive today. A digital data base has been prepared for this research containing all data from notar sources about Split artisans in the mid-fifteenth century – their names, professions, social and legal status, family connections, the location and price of their houses etc. Statistic analysis and critical interpretation of these data will reconstruct many parts of social history and everyday life of artisans as a special group of popolani in medieval Split.
