Investigation of sewing needle demage
During the process of high-speed industrial sewing heat is generated in the needle which can cause damage to threads. If the needle point is damaged, it could lead to loop break or fabric damage, and stitch skipping could occur when the needle penetrates the material. When operating in demanding conditions, sewing machine needles are pushed to their capability limits. Needle manufacturers produce needles with special coatings which prevent damage at the point of the needle. A suitable coating of the needle is necessary, while the needle system depends on the machine type and the kind of sewing job to be done. Thickness and point shape of the needle are the decisive elements in the selection of the appropriate needle. This paper discusses needle and material damage caused by sewing fine knitted fabrics that was investigated by FE-SEM – Scanning Electron Microscope (Mira-Tescan) equipped with EDAX – Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (Bruker). All testing was conducted at the TSRC (Textile Science Research Center) supported by the FP7 REGPOT-2, T-pot project
