A 14-year epidemiological study of non-melanoma skin cancer in Rijeka region, Croatia

A retrospective study was made on the incidence of non- melanoma skin cancers and precancers among the population of Rijeka region, Croatia during the period from 1995 till 2008. That includes basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), keratoacanthoma, Mb. Bowen and Mb. Paget, of which BCC and SCC were the most common. In this fourteen- year period a total of 3290 patients were documented. We analyzed the frequency of each tumor through this period of time as well as localization and sex prevalence. The incidence of non melanoma skin cancers altogether slightly increased, with exception of SCC. The main reason for this increasing incidence is due primary to a sun exposure and depletion of the ozone layer, as well as novel trend of frequent visiting of skin tanning studios. The number of registered cases was slightly higher in males (54, 26%) then in females (45, 74%). The mean age of appearance in men was 66, 1 year of age and in women 65, 3 years of age. The most common pathohistological diagnose was BCC (85, 53%), followed by Mb. Bowen (6, 54%), SCC (4, 71%), keratoacanthoma (3, 13%) and Mb. Paget (0, 09%). Based on these findings, we conclude that the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancers has increased through examined period of time and a special effort should be taken in people education and prevention of this noticeable disease.
