Music teaching in Croatia in the context of contemporary school and society

The concept of contemporary school is of crucial importance for creating a knowledge society and forming skilled, innovative and creative individuals. Through various activities and contents, as well as the use of contemporary media and teaching strategies that correspond to global cultural-civilizational development, both teachers and the educational process got closer to children's needs. In this way each pupil’s creative potential has a possibility to evolve. Starting from the aforementioned, the Croatian National Educational Standard (CNES) has been created as a basis for changes in teaching programs and work methods in the primary school system. The results that we have achieved and that we will present are based on the study and analysis of the teaching plans and programs over the last sixty years, as well as on the new Teaching Plan and Program from 2006, after the introduction of the CNES. Since the conception of music teaching before 2006, which included singing, music literacy, creativity, listening and exploring music, playing music and acquisition of musicological knowledge, could not contribute to the improvement of music teaching, the CNES helped to work on innovation and modernization of music teaching. Nowadays, the aim of music education in primary schools is directed towards the development of general musical culture, establishing and acquiring valuable standards for critical and aesthetic music evaluation. Pupils must become competent users of music art. The necessity for the society is to form a cultural and educated citizen with established cultural-aesthetic needs. Therefore, the approach of the new program is developmental, and it influences acquisition of true musical knowledge and formation of listening repertory and pupils' musical taste. Nowadays, listening and exploring music hold a central place in Croatian primary schools. The new conception of music teaching gives a subordinate role to active music making, which includes singing and playing an instrument, in relation to the one it had before. For example, pupils gain basic knowledge about musical components through active listening to music, which is an obligatory musical activity in school, but they can also participate in performing (playing or singing) different type of songs, if teachers and pupils choose this kind of activities. In the Croatian educational system invaluable importance is given to extracurricular activities, which became a significant component of music education and schooling. Primary school offers different extracurricular musical activities, which comprise vocal-instrumental music playing, dancing and various types of musical creativity. Pupils participate in one or more activity, which develop their specific skills and improve their knowledge. In this way they can be creative and innovative, work individually or in groups, exchange their experiences while working on certain projects and spend their free time in a quality and useful manner. This kind of school is regarded as contemporary and useful to new generations.
