Danube -Sava Canal in Croatia Connects Adriatic Ports with European Inland Waterway Net

The article presents the idea and technical data about the future Danube-Sava Canal in Croatia. From the first idea, in 1737, involving only the navigation purpose, we are today facing the multi-purpose role of the Danube-Sava canal, which construction is expected to begin in the next years. In the years 1990 and 1998 the multi-purpose Danube-Sava Canal was proclaimed as the strategic structure of Croatia, in the document of the Croatian Parliament "Development Strategy of the Republic of Croatia". The preliminary works have mainly been completed and were financed from the Government Budget. Since May 1996 the governmental "Headquarter for Construction of the Danube-Sava Canal" has been active. The multi-purpose importance of the future canal is covered by its three major functions: irrigation, navigation and drainage. In the strategic traffic policy of Croatia, navigation along the canal should be considered only in the context of the 560 km long combined river-railway traffic corridor between the Danube regions and the Adriatic region. By this canal, the navigation from the Sava river towards the Western Europe will be shortened by 417 km, and towards Eastern Europe by 85 km. The potential traffic in the canal is projected to 7 million tons per annum. The navigation features of canal are reflected through its Vb class. Hydrographically, the canal route generally follows the existing water courses of the Vuka, the Bosut, and the Biđ rivers making a new unique canal catchment area and new canal runoff system.
