Spatial and temporal relations in the conceptual metaphor "Events are Things"
The primary process under investigation is the general process of nominalization, its repercussions on the position of certain constructional elements in English light verb constructions and the points of convergence and divergence in applying a contrastive analytical methodology in comparing typologically diverse languages such as English, Croatian and German. In the focus of our investigation will be the conceptual metaphor EVENTS ARE THINGS This conceptual metaphor allows for verbal processes to be conceptualised as physical objects with their discrete shapes and volumes which can be manipulated according to the situation as perceived by the speaker. It may con-tribute to explaining different instances of formally established equivalence regarding the notion of Aktionsart as detected in the use of analytic verbo-nominal constructions with the set of superschematic light verbs and their role in applying Talmy’s (1988) postulates on forces and barriers.
