Teachers' role in the "upbringing" of children - current state and perspectives - Attitudes of university students involved in teacher training studies

Analyses of pedagogical practices show that, in relation to the educational aspect, the aspect of "upbringing" of children in schools has been neglected. This contributes to the confusing situation in which on the one side there are schools from "futuristic" predictions with respect to technology, information and communication capacities, while on the other side there are almost disorientated schools in relation to the real needs of children and young people. In this paper, the authors present the results of a study conducted on a sample of students from the University of Rijeka, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Academy of Fine Arts, undergraduate and graduate courses of different teacher training studies (N = 96), which took place between years 2009 and 2011. The main results of the research suggest that students who are actively involved in the study of pedagogical practices perceive the problem of neglecting the role of "upbringing" of children in relation to the educational task. They believe that the reasons are the overload of teachers with expected educational tasks, not sufficiently developed teachers' competences in the task of the "upbringing" of children, as well as the neglect of the "upbringing" aspect in programs of professional continual life-long education for teachers. Participants emphasized the need for developing the program of teacher education and the need for strengthening the role of schools in "upbringing" of children. Most of them suggest that schools could try to overcome this challenge by encouraging family-school partnership. The partnership with parents is seen by participants as an important precondition for the realization of the modern educational curriculum.
