Angular Rate Gyros and Mass Flow Sensors: A Unified Approach
In this paper a unified approach of using the Coriolis force on moving fluid for the purpose of the angular rate and the mass flow rate measurement is presented. The operation of the laminar jet angular rate sensor and the Coriolis mass flow rate meter has been analyzed. In both sensors the Coriolis force was used to generate the metering signal. As a result a new possibility for the angular rate measurements is foreseen. The new method employs an incompressible fluid ciculation or oscillation in a closed loop. Due to the fluid motion in the presence of sensor rotation the Coriolis force is generated. The tube deflects undre the action of the Coriolis force and its motion is used to produce the sensor output signal. An approximate theory was used to analyze the operation of the sensors.
