NAVS naphthalane for the treatment of oral lichen planus

NAVS Naphthalan for the Treatment of Oral Lichen Planus Naphthalan is a mixture of geogenic hydrocarbons that has been used for decades in treatment of dermatological diseases. Among many present hydrocarbons, steranes are the most prominent compounds, as their cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene structure indicates bioactive properties. Recently, a new variety has been derived by removing aromatic fractions, and by concentrating steranes: the „Non Aromatic - Very rich in Steranes“(NAVS) Naphthalan. It has been thoroughly studied and showed to be effective in psoriasis vulgaris treatment. Encouraged with those findings, and having produced a preparation suitable for application on oral mucosa, our goal is to study NAVS as a potential treatment option for oral diseases. Lichen planus is a common chronic inflammatory disease affecting mucous membranes and skin. It is an immune-mediated disease of an unclear etiology. Among its clinical varieties, erosive and atrophic types of oral lichen planus (OLP) are symptomatic and require treatment. Conventional treatment consists of topical or intralesional steroid application. Taking into account that local steroids can be applied during limited time span due to their adverse effects (e.g. epithelial atrophy, teleangiectasiae, secondary infection and even systemic absorption), there is a need of investigating alternative approaches for treatment of chronic immune-mediated oral diseases. A case report: We would like to present the first case of erosive oral lichen planus (activity (hyperkeratosis, erythema, ulceration) score 23 according to Pibooniyom et al., 2005) effectively treated with topical NAVS Naphthalan in adhesive paste. Conclusion: Although a large scale double blind randomized trial of NAVS Naphthalan in OLP treatment is warranted, this report shows promising future for NAVS Naphthalan in the treatment of oral diseases, as it possesses healing properties without side-effects known for steroids.
