Prediction of Material Removal Rates of Cylindrical Wire Electrical Discharge Turning Processes
Small cylindrical parts made of electrically conductive materials, which are difficult to machine by a conventional cutting method, can be produced by Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM). This is a thermoelectric process that erodes the workpiece material by a series of discrete electrical sparks between the workpiece and the travelling wire electrode. Cylindrical Wire Electrical Discharge Turning (CWEDT) uses a WEDM machine in combination with a submerged rotation spindle as a workpiece clamping device. The main application disadvantage of CWEDT process is the amount of time required for part production in comparison to conventional machining. This paper presents a comparison of two different mathematical modelling techniques for the prediction of CWEDT process speed, i.e. the Material Removal Rate (MRR). Artificial Neural Network (ANN) programming provides a more accurate prediction of the MRR behaviour compared to regression analysis and Design of Experiments (DOE).
