Academy of Medical Sciences of Croatia Jubilee 1961-2011

I am deeply honored and proud to dedicate this Editorial to the successful and glorious 50-year jubilee of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Croatia (AMSC). Our Academy is among the oldest medical academies in the world ; namely, only five academies were founded earlier than our Academy. AMSC is active in the International Academy Medical Panel, world organization of medical academies, too. AMSC performs its activities through the Boards, the working bodies for the main scientific fields of medicine: internal medicine, surgery, basic medicine, psychiatry, public health, dental medicine, veterinary medicine and pharmacology. Members of the Academy are physicians and scientists who made great contributions to medical research and practice. It was founded in 1961 within the framework of the Croatian Medical Association (Hrvatski liječnički zbor) as Committee for Scientific Research of the Association General Committee. In 1971, the Committee was renamed into Medical Academy of Croatian Medical Association. In 1983, it was separated from the Croatian Medical Association and since then has acted as the Academy of Medical Sciences of Croatia. The Academy of Medical Sciences of Croatia as master of the Croatian Medical Association (CMA), recognizes a member who, throughout his/her career, has made significant contribution within 128 societies and specialties. Croatian Dermatovenereological Society of CMA is one of these societies, contributing greatly to the continuing medical education programs with its official journal Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica. As vice-president of the AMSC and Council chairwoman of the AMSC journal Acta Medica Croatica, I am proud to announce a book dedicated to the 50- year glorius history of AMSC. Also as Guest Editor of the same journal, we will publish a thematic issue dedicated on this occasion to allergic diseases today. Dermatovenereologists give support to the jubilee by organizing symposia with international participation and continuing medical education courses with textbooks, as follows: Dermatovenereology in General Medicine, February 26, 2011 ; Chronic Venous Insufficiency – Sclerotherapy, April 9, 2011 ; and International Symposium: Bullous Dermatoses, October 28-29, 2011. It will be dermatovenereologists contribution to the ongoing scientific education in AMSC activities, especially on the occasion of the AMSC 50th anniversary.
