Preliminary data on marine diatoms in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the western Balkans, bordering Croatia (932 km) to the north and south-west, Serbia (302 km) to the east, and Montenegro (225 km) to the southeast. The country is mostly mountainous, encompassing the central Dinaric Alps. The northeastern parts reach into the Pannonian basin, while in the south it borders the Adriatic. The country has only 24.5 km (15 mi) kilometers of coastline around the town of Neum which is the only coastal town in Bosnia and Herzegovina and an important tourism destination. The town of Neum itself has 1, 993 residents. Continental shelf area of Bosnia and Herzegovina (surface area of ca. 2 km2) has a maximum depth of 27 m (http://earthtrends.wri.org). The average depth is 17 m. Marine diatoms have never been studied in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim of the study was, for the first time ever, to determine the taxonomic composition and seasonality of benthic and planktonic marine diatoms in this country. Sediment samples were fixed in a 4% formalin solution. The collected samples were prepared for investigation by cleaning frustules using the method described by Hustedt (1930). Examination, identification and counting of benthic diatoms were carried out using the oil immersion lens (100 x) of the Microstar binocular microscope, AO Scientific Instruments. Photomicrographs were taken for the majority of taxa. Samples for the analysis of planktonic diatom abundance were fixed in 2% neutralized formaldehyde. Cells were counted using an inverted microscope Olympus IMT-2 equipped with phase contrast (Utermöhl 1958), and results are expressed as cell density per liter. The most common benthic diatom taxa were noted within genera Licmophora, Achnanthes, Diploneis, Surirella, Striatella, Grammatophora, Nitzschia, Caloneis, Amphora, and etc. High contribution of brackish taxa was registered. Among planktonic forms, taxa from genera Bacteriastrum, Hemiaulus, Rhizosloenia, Proboscia, Guinardia, Chaetoceros, Coscinodiscus and Pleurosigma prevailed. These present findings contribute essential base-line information that should aid in evaluating the state of this area in the future.
