Choice of rural tourism destination by means of methods of multiple attribute decision making
Thanks to the fact that the development of tourism did not lead to significant degradation of natural resources and spatial devastation, many countries developed or are able to evaluate their competitive advantages by means of rural tourism. The question is asked which rural tourism destination is optimal, i.e. to which destination the decision maker (tourist) will give the benefit of a visit and stay? Which destination, in the best way, represents the rural area, natural, cultural and historic resources, as well as the original traditional elements, thus representing the best choice? The intention is to, using methods of multi-attributable decision-making, i.e. by means of the methods for selection of optimal alternatives in cases where no information on the decision makers' preferences was provided, using methods for which there is information on attributes, i.e. utilising the SAW and the TOPSIS methods, choose the optimal rural tourism destination by comparing the destinations of Austria, Italy, Hungary, Slovenia, Istria and Croatia excluding Istria, according to the chosen criteria. The chosen criteria are: price, marketing (promotion), tourist destination, density and quality of accommodation capacities. For the needs of the comparison, the criteria and comparative competitiveness analysis grades for Croatian rural tourism of the Institute of Tourism from Zagreb will be used, which are published in the report on Croatian Rural Tourism Competitiveness in 2005. The procedure by which the comparative analysis results were obtained was not explained in the report. The purpose of the research, within the framework of rural tourism and methods of multi-attributable decision-making, is to determine which rural tourism destination, out of the six encompassed by the research, represents the optimal destination for tourists. According to the competitiveness indicators from the report on Croatian Rural Tourism Competitiveness, Austria is in first place, while the research results of the conducted analyses using the method of multi-attributable decision-making, show that the rural tourism destination to which a tourist will give the benefit of a visit and stay is Slovenia.
