Effect of somatic cell count on milk composition from individual udder quarters
The objective of this study was to determine effect of the somatic cell count (SCC) on milk composition from individual udder quarters. For that purpose 151 milk samples from individual udder quarters were collected and milk chemical and physical components were analyzed. The results showed that the individual milk sample protein content sig-nificantly (p<0.05) increased from 3.39% in low-SCC milk (≤100, 000 cells/mL) to 3.60% in high-SCC milk samples (>1, 000, 000 cells/mL). Casein content increased till SCC increased up to 1, 000, 000 cells/mL, while in high-SCC milk significantly (p<0.05) decreased (from 2.65% to 2.36%). Lactose content in high-SCC milk was significantly (p<0.001) lower (4.16 %) than in low-SCC milk (4.73%). A significant (p<0.05) difference was found in the non-fat content in in-dividual milk samples when SCC increased over 1, 000, 000 cells /mL. Value of pH showed decreased up to 1, 000, 000 cells/mL and then significantly (p<0.05) increased. Titratable acidity significantly (p<0.05) decreased in high-SCC in-dividual milk samples (6.03%).
