RAIL TRANSPORT FOR THE BENEFIT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Due to the growing traffic volume and the resulting increased harmful impact on the environment, measures should be undertaken to reduce this harmful impact. Since road traffic is the biggest environmental polluter in the area of overall traffic and since road traffic alone is not capable of sufficiently reducing this harmful impact, it is necessary to shift a part of transport onto the railways. Railway, namely, features much lower specific energy consumption and harmful emissions compared to road traffic. Besides, railway is also undertaking measures within its own sector to additionally increase energy efficiency, and to reduce harmful emissions and noise. Railway is the only transport mode that has been reducing CO2 emission since 1990, whereas all the other transport modes have been increasing this emission over the past period. This has resulted from improved energy efficiency of railway transport. The paper presents the basic advantages of railways compared to other transport modes regarding energy efficiency and harmful emissions. It primarily analyses the CO2 emission which is one of the causes of the greenhouse effect. It further provides possible measures that can be undertaken to realize the reduction of CO2 specific emission. This is possible on the rail vehicles themselves, on infrastructure, traffic organization and adequate political decisions through legislation and other forms. The increase of energy efficiency and reduction of CO2 emission on the very vehicles can be achieved by introducing new drive designs, by application of advanced construction materials, and electronic components that reduce energy losses and have lower mass and volume. The problem of noise has been analysed for the freight trains that use shoe brakes with cast iron brake blocks. During the braking process they generate loud noise and damage the wheel rim which additionally increases the noise generated by the rolling of the wheels along the rails. A solution is presented that includes the application of K-brake blocks on new freight wagons and LL-brake blocks on the existing freight wagons, which does not require any adaptations on the braking system.
