The structure of limpet (Gastropoda, Patellidae) populations on two locations in SE Adriatic

A study of patellid limpets was conducted between June and September 2006 on two locations in southeast Adriatic Sea. One location was on the island of Lokrum which is directly exposed to the currents from the Otranto strait and the other in the port of Dubrovnik influenced by city sewer. Samples were collected randomly on 8 stations using the sampling frame. A total of 328 patellid limpets were collected belonging to four species: ‹Patella rustica› (total number (N) = 156), ‹Patella aspera› (N = 129), ‹Patella caerulea› var. ‹subplana› (N = 24) and ‹Patella caerulea› (N = 19). After species determination, width, length, total body weight and wet flesh weight were measured. The majority of limpets in the largest size class (lenght (L) › 30 millimetres (mm)) belonged to ‹Patella caerulea› and ‹Patella aspera› species. High limpets abundance was recorded on both locations (1220 individuals/square metre (m2) on the first, 700 individuals/m2 on the second), but higher average lenght of all species was recorded in the port of Dubrovnik than on the island of Lokrum. This could be explained with higher eutrophication level in the port of Dubrovnik.
