Extrapyramidal symptoms in patients treated with typical and atypical antipsychotics
Atypical agents are pharmacologically distinct from their neuroleptic predecessors. Their primary advantages are their superior side effect profiles, particularly with regard to extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS). We wanted to investigate the association of treatment with typical and atypical antipsychotics and manifestation of EPS. The study included 30 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, according to DSM-IV-TR criteria, divided into two groups. The first group consisted of 15 patients, treated with atypical antipsychotics for a period of six months. The second group consisted of 15 patients, treated with typical antipsychotics for a period of six months. The extrapyramidal symptom rating scale (ESRS) was used in order to assess EPS levels of patients treated with antipsychotic agents. Our study showed that, compared with conventional antipsychotics, atypical antipsychotics are less associated with EPS. Treatment with atypical antipsychotics had a positive impact on compliance, psychosocial functioning and quality of life.
