Names: A Mentalistic Account
First, the standard account of the meaning of names (Devitt & Sterelny 1999) is criticized, mainly on the issue of the causal links that are supposed to ground the reference of a name. Second, a mentalistic account of the meaning of names is proposed. It is hypothesized that there is a certain cognitive structure, a name-ICM (idealized cognitive model) underlying our use of names.
