The use of measurement scales to diagnose and assess the psychic condition of pentoxyphiline - treated MID cases
Forty cases affected by multi-infarct dementia ( MID ) and diagnosed based on DSM-III-R and Hatchinski ischemia score ( HIS ) higher than 7 are analyzed for correlation with the assessment scales and CT scan. The cases include 32 females with the average age of 68.5±9.8 years and 8 males aged 68.8±10.4 years on average. There are no significant differences between the sexes on the Folstein Mini-mental State Examination (FMMS), or on the Gottfries, Brane, Steen (GBS) and Sandoz Clinical Assessment-Geriatric Scale (SCAG). Nor is there any correlation between the GBS, SCAG and FMMS values. Since regression analysis shows a high correlation between GBS and SCAG, this suggests that a single scale, chosen according to interview preference, would suffice. While about 77% of the cases show CT abnormalities, there is no evidence of differences by sex. GBS score, however, reveals more severe disability in MID cases with the pathological than normal CT scans.
