Characterization of different electrode geometries for ethanol vapour conductometric sensor

The goal of this research is to develop low cost conductometric sensor for ethanol vapors. Sensor is comprised from PEDOT-PSS polymer complex in form of thin spin-coated film on planar electrodes. Sensor’s potential was investigated. During the experiments it was found that calibration curve of sensor response signal versus tested partial pressures of ethanol is linear. Four different types of electrode geometries were used: four point, four track, quad and dual. Two methods were used for measuring the resistance. To measure total resistance and change of total resistance of sensor simple 2-point method was used. To measure the resistance and change of resistance of polymer film only, 4-point method was used. 4-point measurements were performed with custom credit card sized electronic tag, designed by Erasmus Technology LPP, UK. From experimental results it can be seen that fraction of contact resistance in total sensor resistance is large, but decreases with increased number of polymer layers. Track and quad types of electrodes are the best for the preparation of sensors, with quad type being more suitable than track one, due to lower absolute values of resistances and lower fraction of contact resistance. It is shown that additives like sorbitol, ethylene glycol and Triton X-100 influence the sensor response profile and absolute values of resistance. When working with pure ethanol additives do not improve sensor response profile in any way.
