Adamantane derivatives of aza-crown ethers and their use in treatment of tumor
Since its discovery crown ethers have been used in applications across the spectrum of science. Because of their structural characteristics these compounds exhibit ionophoric properties in membranes, behaving very similarly to the natural ionophores (such as gramicidin, valinomycin, nonactin, etc.) which makes them particularly interesting and useful. Beyond their traditional place in chemistry, their applications in biology include the ability to regulate enzime activity, interact with and cleave DNA, and act as antimicrobial agents[1]. Although the cytotoxic effects of crown ethers on mammalian cells (including tumor cells) were known for a long time, the potential antitumor ability of these compounds was rarely studied. We describe the investigation of potential antitumor abilities for eight aza-crown ethers with one adamantane moiety attached to the side arm of monoaza-18-crown-6 as well as two adamantane moieties attached to the side arms of N, N'-4, 13-diaza-18-crown-6.
