Information Channels and Tourist Preferences Regarding the Event and Entertainment Offering: the Case of Istria

It is important to correctly identify the interests of tourists and evaluate the trends in tourism demand through which these interests are manifested. This generates the need for enriching the tourism offering for tourists with special interests and finding the most effective channels to communicate this to tourists. The subject of this paper are the results of a survey conducted during the tourist season of 2008 in the coastal tourist resorts of Istria on a sample of 1, 325 respondents, staying in 3-star and 4-star hotels, as well as in tourist settlements and 3-star motor camps. Two rounds of research were conducted, the first in August, the second in September 2008, covering a total of 30 accommodation facilities. This paper examines information channels and the ways of communicating information to guests vacationing in Istria about the event and entertainment offering, that is, the types of events, performances and festivals, and the variety of entertainment guests can choose from. The paper also looks at the place where guests obtained information about events and entertainment, and it examines guest preferences and the level of guest satisfaction with the event and entertainment offering. The intention of the authors is to underscore the role of the channels through which tourists gather information about the event and entertainment offering in Istria, and to underline the need of matching this offering with preferences expressed by tourists. The level of guest satisfaction with the existing event and entertainment offering is the best indication of how well matched the offering and preferences are.
