An overview about PRRS in Croatia

Despite the fact that PRRS appeared in Europe in 1990 and affected many neighbouring countries, the disease was not established in Croatia until 1995, due to the fact that Croatia was at war until that time, and the international swine trade was at a standstill. The first clinical outbreak with severe reproductive disorders in breeding animals of unexplained reproductive disease was recorded in 1995. At that time, Croatia had not yet developed PRRS diagnostics. Therefore, serum samples were sent to the Veterinary Diagnostic Institute in Lelystad. The serum samples examined in the Netherlands tested positive by the IPMA test. Since 1996, serological diagnostics have been introduced to the Croatian Veterinary Institute (CVI) using the commercial ELISA kit HerdCheck Anti-PRRSV (IDEXX). Between 1996 and 2010, some 60, 000 serum samples were serologically tested at the CVI. In that period, the disease spread to almost all major pig breeding herds and the seroprevalence of PRRSV in domestic swine was estimated to be over 90%. Also, specific antibodies to PRRS were detected in 9.6% of wild boar blood samples tested by ELISA. Since PRRS is widespread in pig populations in Croatia, many swine herds showed severe respiratory disorders corresponding with porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). However, in 2002 postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) was first diagnosed in Croatia in the same swine herds where PRRS was already present. Since then, diseases associated with porcine circovirus type 2 have become the dominant health issue in pigs. The first vaccinations against PRRS were carried out in 2005 with the vaccine Progressis (Merial). Despite the opinion that vaccination is an effective measure for controlling PRRS, in this case, positive effects on swine health were not observed after vaccination. In 2007, at a pig farm with a chronic enzootic form of PRRS, significant reproductive disorders in gilts imported from a European country occurred suddenly. The reproductive disease was characterized by an abortion storm at all stages of gestation, premature farrowings at around 110 days of gestation, an increase in the number of stillbirths and weak piglets born with a considerable increase of preweaning mortality. An unexpected increase in gilt and sow mortality rates were also observed. According to the clinical and pathomorphological features and laboratory evidence, these recurrent outbreaks were referred to as episodes of “severe acute PRRS” or “atypical PRRS” as described above. After a subsequent study conducted at the reference Veterinary Institute in Pulawy, PRRSV isolates belonging to the European type were founded. The phylogenetic analysis of the virus strain from Croatian herds showed that Polish, Hungarian and Serbian strains were closely related and had ORF7 consisting of 387 nucleotides characteristic for subtype 1 strains (Stadejek et al. 2010). Due to the variation of RT-PCR assays results in the CVI Pathology Department, the immunohistochemical (IHC) assay for the PRSS virus was introduced in routine diagnostic procedures in 2007. In the period from 2007 to 2010, a total of 4, 048 pig tissue samples were examined by IHC. The PRRS epidemiological situation in the Croatian pig population today is more or less stable, although an enzootic form of PRRS is still present in many swine herds.
