Corrosion inhibition of AA 2017A aluminium alloy by CeCl3 in NaCl solution

The effect of CeCl3 addition in 0.5M NaCl solution on the corrosion behaviour of aluminium alloy AA 2017A has been investigated. Four different concentrations (5×10-5 mol dm-3, 1×10-4 mol dm-3, 3×10-4 mol dm-3 and 5×10-4 mol dm-3) of CeCl3 were studied. The evolution of open circuit potential with time was recorded, along with linear polarization measurements and potentiodynamic polarization measurements, which were used for evaluation of corrosion inhibition properties of CeCl3 on investigated aluminium alloy. The results have showed that CeCl3 acts as cathodic corrosion inhibitor for AA 2017A alloy. Optical microscopy images of alloy surface after potentiodynamic polarization measurements have showed that pitting corrosion occurred on AA 2017A alloy in 0.5 mol dm-3 NaCl solution. The presence of CeCl3 in NaCl solution decreased the pitting corrosion attack on the alloy surface.
