CAan dietary protein overload alter creatinine clearance and 24h proteinuria in healthy volunteers?
It is well established that kidney function can be altered by the glucose overload in diabetic patients or by the dietary protein overload in kidney patients, in both cases due to the false activation of the JGA-renin-angiotensin mechanism. The important question is whether protein excess can alter or even damage normal kidneys, since Western diets are often reach in animal proteins. The idea was to try detecting alteration of kidney function in young volunteers that might be attributed to the activation of control mechanisms due to the protein overload. Creatinine clearance and total proteins in 24h urine are determined in 13 volunteers on two occasions. The initial is done during low protein diet, while during the second measurements dietary protein overload was taken (2g of proteins/kg of body mass), with no differences in physical activities during measurements. No restrictions of carbohydrates or lipids were imposed.
