Foreign Direct Investments in the Tourism Sector of the Republic of Croatia
The issue of foreign direct investments (FDI) in the tourism sector has been poorly exploited in the existing literature. At the global level, tourism counts for a minor share of total FDI inflows and outflows. In this respect, the Republic of Croatia is no exception. Given investments can contribute to the overall economic development, they can be regarded as a tool for tourism development as well. FDI in developing countries, as well as in Croatia, can encourage the development of the tourism sector. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the causality between foreign tourist arrivals and FDI in the Republic of Croatia. The paper attempts to determine whether these relations can be described as 'tourism-driven FDI', 'FDI-led tourism' or two-way causal relationship between FDI and foreign tourist arrivals. For this purpose, Toda-Yamamoto causality test will be applied.
