Antibiotics in food - etiological factor of Erythema exudativum multiforme in children

Erythema exudativum multiforme is a type of hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) that occurs in response to medications, infections or illness. The exact cause is still unknown. Medications associated with erythema multiforme include sulfonamides, penicillin, barbiturates, and phenytoin. Associated infections are herpes simplex and mycoplasma infection. Our patient was an 8 and a half year old child. She was hospitalized in Clinical Hospital Osijek at the Clinical Department for Pediatrics for three months under a diagnosis of Erythema exudativum multiforme. During that period of time she was tested for most common allergens and underwent all necessary diagnostics, where contact and inhalation allergies were excluded. Also, there were no clinical or laboratory signs of infection. Ever since her dismissal from the Clinical Hospital her parents have photographed changes on her skin and had noted her daily meals. From the parents evidence pediatricians have found a link between turkey meat and appearance of skin rash. Based on that link they presumed that the possible cause of this disease could be the antibiotics which are an additive in turkey diet.
