The replication of Legionella in alveolar epithelial cells
Legionella genus comprise more than 50 species. In humans, these bacteria can cause Legionnaires´disease and Pontiac fewer. It has been proven that Legionella can multiply in alveolar macrophages. There are little information about proliferation of this bacteria in alveolar epithelial cells. Therefore, in this study we examined intracelullar growth of L. longbeachae and L. pneumophila in alveolar epithelial cell line. In this experiment L. longbeachae and L. pneumophila strain were used. Alveolar epithelial cell line (A549) cells was infected with bacteria at an MOI of 10. Bacterial replication was followed for three consecutive days after initial infection. Two hours after infection ~102 bacteria was isolated. After 72 hours there was an exponential growth of L. pneumophila (106 cfu/ml) and L. longbeachae (~105 cfu/ml). The intracellular localization of bacteria has been shown by Giemsa stain. The results indicate that both Legionella species have the ability to replicate in alveolar epithelial A549 cells.
