Polychlorinated biphenyls, dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in soil samples from selected industrial and airport areas in Croatia
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) belong to the non-polar, highly lipophilic and persistent environmental micropollutants which are rapidly and strongly sorbed by most soils and sediments. Data on the levels of those compounds in Croatian soils are generally lacking. To provide an insight into the background levels and possible point sources in the coastal part of Croatia we have measured PCBs in the surface soils collected a) along the aprons and runways of four airports and outside the airport premises at various distances (1 to 2000 m) from the airport fence, b) in a former chloralkali electrolysis plant area at a distance of 10-15 m from the plant building and 50-2500 m from the plant courtyard, c) in the vicinity of a former ferromanganese plant, and d) close to an aluminium producing plant. PCDDs/PCDFs were determined in two industrial soil samples possibly contaminated due to the chloralkali electrolysis process and in one airport soil sample containing PCBs at mg/kg dry matter (d.m.) level.
