Measurement of radon during the conditioning process of spent radium-226 sources in Croatia
The conditioning of the spent radium sources in Croatia was performed by a specially trained team from the Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf, under contract with the IAEA, using an IAEA developed and approved procedure. The source conditioning took place in a waste storage and treatment facility at the Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb, Croatia. This paper describes experience gained during these operations and radiation protection measures undertaken. During the conditioning very high concentrations of radon (up to 2 x 106 Bq/m3) were measured. All radon was kept on filters in the ventilation system and caused some radiation protection problems during the period of several months after radium conditioning was done.
