Qualitative Methodology as a Means of Creating Space for the Articulation of Experience of Homelessness in Croatia
This paper is based on my choice to principally use qualitative methods in a research project with homeless people in Croatia. Although quantitative methods have the advantage of the anonymous context (especially significant when dealing with sensitive topics), qualitative methods were predominantly used in consideration of my positionality, the research project’s goals and overall context. Since homelessness is not understood or even officially recognised in Croatia, it was necessary to create space for the articulation of homeless experiences and their worldview to dismantle and dispel myths as well as stereotypes about homelessness in Croatia. Apart from the (positive) features, this paper also aims to discuss the problems of using qualitative methods with a marginalised social group as well as the dilemmas that were encountered during (and after) fieldwork.
