High-power metamaterial-based CRLH waveguide –state of the art and possible applications
One of the new possible applications of Composite Right/left-Handed (CRLH) transmission lines is microwave heating and diagnostics in various plasma experiments. A guiding structure (or an antenna) to be used in this applications should sustain high-power levels (> 1kW). Recently, the groups at University of Zagreb and University of Stuttgart proposed a structure based on resonant- slot coupled cavity resonators (RSCCC), which is actually a high-power version of wire-based metamaterial waveguide. Here, we review the basic properties of this structure, current state of the art and possible applications. It is shown that it is indeed feasible to manufacture well-matched high-power CRLH guiding structure with completely closed gap between a backward-wave mode and a forward-wave mode. However, the design of a leaky- wave antenna based on this waveguide has not reached a mature stage. Further investigation of matching of the antenna in a mode with infinite wavelength is still needed.
