The outlines on precipitation amount monitoring
Already in the very early years, when a sufficient number of precipitation measurements were collected and published, comparisons between current and average precipitation amounts could be found in the scientific journals. The calculation of climatological normals for the period 1901-1930 for a large number of meteorological stations all over the world provided the global monitoring of monthly precipitation amount anomalies which are summarized in Monthly Weather Records publication. Still at that time a principle was established which stated that the recent observations have to be analyzed from the perspective of all former observations. This presentation gives the overview of the methods of monitoring precipitation amounts most used today all over the world. Also, there will be shown a new method of monitoring dry and wet conditions at daily scale. It is based on cumulative precipitation daily amounts for each day backward one to thirty days which are compared to long term period average data. The examples for several meteorological stations in Europe using precipitation data from 1961-2008 period will be presented.
