Reduction of azo dyes with sodium hypophosphite in order to minimize wastewater pollution
In order to decolorize wastewaters in the production and application processes of azo dyes, reduction is one of the commonly used method if the obtaining of primary amines is in permisive range or if they could be used as a secondary raw material or even more as a drug, what is a case with C.I.Mordant Yellow 10. In the present work, sodium hypophosphite has been used for reduction of chosen azo dyes. The application of this reducant to the system containing azo compounds has not been described in the literature. Considering the need for wastewater pollution minimization, the phosphites are more convinient for the environment than sulphates. The coagulation/flocculation method for wastewater treatment has been used after isolation of aromatic amines. The evaluation of treated water quality has been based on determined ecological parameters: COD, BOD, TOC and AOX.
