Percutaneous coronary interventions in treatment of acute myocardial infarction

From April 1997 to April 2001, 92 patients with Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were treated by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in our Division. In October 2000 continuous 24-hour service of the team trained in PCI was organized. Thirty five PCI were performed before introduction of this service, and 57 after its establishment. Time from pain onset to intervention was reduced from 201.6 ± 107.5 to 163.26 ± 56.08 min. „Door to balloon time“ was shortened from 129.5 ± 46.6 to 81.4 ± 30.0 min. Primary success rate of the emergency PCI was 93%. Mortality within 30 days was 8.7%, mostly in patients with associated cardiogenic shock. Emergency PCI is the optimal treatment mode in patient with AMI in an institution with organized 24-hour service by experienced team of interventional cardiologists and trained nurses, particularly in those with concomitant cardiogenic shock.
