NATO Security Issues for the Early 21st Century

NATO’s role in supplementing the work of other international institutions to consolidate democracy and foster the integration of Southeastern Europe, as volatile region, into the transatlantic community is extremely important. To achieve these objectives, the Alliance should expand its consultations with governments in the region. Moreover, it should intensify its assistance to the region in military reform and restructuring, as well as other areas of mutual interest between NATO member states and the states of Southeastern Europe. These collaborative efforts should be confined to security-related issues and international financial institutions to develop a comprehensive approach to development and integration in Southeastern Europe into NATO and EU. The most significant decision is to tailor the Membership Action Plan (MAP) to the needs of the five PfP states of Southeastern Europe (as well as four others aspirants to membership).
