Microstructural Changes as a Result of Hydrogen Gradient in API Pipeline
Absorption of hydrogen in steel structures is a corrosion phenomenon tightly related to the microstructure. In this study accelerated corrosion tests and XRD analysis of ferrite - pearlitic API pipeline steels were performed in order to examine hydrogen embrittlement resistance. Under the influence of electrolytically established hydrogen gradient in steel, the significant microstructural parameters have been changed: higher dislocation density and the remarcable increase of residual stresses were obtained. It was shown that steels having the microstructure capable of better whitstanding to hydrogen induced microstrains are most resistant to HE.
