Comparison of audio devices using probability density function of rate of change
The rate of change of dynamic signals plays a significant role in the reproduction quality. Reproduction of fast changing signals is mainly affected by upper frequency limit of analyzed device. But, there are other factors, which can influence on reproduction of dynamic signals. This is especially true in loudspeakers, where dynamic characteristics of audio signals make them very hard to analyze. Standardized static test signals do not give the complete picture of an audio device quality. In this paper we summarize an analysis of audio signals reproduced from amplifiers and loudspeakers, with a slightly different approach. The approach is based on the first derivative of input and response signals, that is, on calculation and analysis of the probability density function of the first derivative. The analysis was focused on other factors affecting reproduction of fast changing signals, not on upper frequency limit of audio devices and systems, which generally affect on rate of change. The main advantage of this approach is that short signals can be used to test audio devices and transducers.
