Morphological Characteristics of Evergreen Oak Acorn from Seed Stands in Croatia

Evergreen Oak forest in Croatia grow in an ue-Mediterranean region in zone of ecological-managerial forest type III-L-10 over an area of approximately 80 000 ha. Three sub-zones can be differentiated in this zone due to the diversity of ecological criteria: north, central and southern. A few centuries ago Evergreen Oak in this region formed coherent forests, the remains of which can be found here today in rare old specimens of significant dimensions. Due to felling for shipbuilding activities, clearing, forest fires etc., today it is extremely difficult to find larger areas of Evergreen Oak seedling forests (high forests) on the Karst. They are mainly low degraded forms with a little participation of Evergreen oak. Furthermore, global changes have not spared these ecosystems, some of which are situated in the centres of the most polluted macro-regions in Croatia - the areas of Rijeka and Kaštela, which contributed to further worsening of conditions for Evergreen Oak forests. Over the last 50 years there has been marked small consumption of Evergreen Oak acorns for the needs of biological reproduction of forests on the eu-Mediteranian Karst.
