STRATEGIC PERFORMANCE WITHIN PHARMACEUTICAL SECTOR IN CROATIA
Growing, ageing and migrating populations, increasingly empowered patients and mounting funding pressures are all having a substantial impact on healthcare. The price of pharmaceutical innovation is increasing over the years. The volumes and complexity of the related knowledge is increasing accordingly. This challenges the existing model of pharmaceutical innovation, raising questions on rationality of further investments. Within intense, ever changing knowledge based sector where strategies are „hypotheses” it is of the utmost importance to manage increasing volume of knowledge, and ensure effective information flow so proper decisions could be made and proper courses taken. Using secondary research, due diligence and data analysis, strategic position of the pharmaceutical sector has been evaluated and described using SWOT model. Once determining critical relevance of knowledge management as a strategic management tool, primary research has been executed in order to recognize attitudes of leaders within the national subsidiaries of multinational pharmaceutical companies operating in Croatia regarding implementation of knowledge management as a strategic performance tool and its contribution to business value. For countries with small population and additional pharmaceutical market entry barriers improvements in knowledge management might contribute in shortening the time of novel medicines becoming available for patients in need and their health care providers. The most relevant reasons for implementing knowledge management were recognized: increasing efficacy by improving productivity, improving competitive advantages, and integrating knowledge within the company. Also, the most relevant results from implementing knowledge management were recognized: improved skills and knowledge of workers, improved workers engagement in the work place, and improved efficacy and productivity. Relations were found between several reasons and results of implementing knowledge management. Finally, differences between attitudes of leaders working for national companies versus those from leaders working for multinational companies have been recognized. The particular value of this research is its focus to key interfaces of pharmaceutical organizations other than drug discovery process, the one that is most often in the core of knowledge management related research.
