Medium-chain fatty acids prevent accumulation of fumonisins in feeds

The findings described here are part of a larger study of the effects of mixtures of antifungal antioxidants, essential oil components and medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) on mold growth and mycotoxin levels in feeds. Fusarium verticillioides was grown on sterilized swine and chicken feeds incubated at 25°C and water activities 0.95 and 0.98, respectively. Fumonisins B1 (FB1) and B2 (FB2) in the feeds were determined using immunoaffinity clean-up followed by HPLC analysis. Addition of increasing levels of octanoic and decanoic acids to the antifungal mixtures was associated with significant reduction in both FB1 and FB2 levels in the chicken feed. Subsequently, the effect of the MCFA combination alone was investigated and, at 1000 ppm level, aw 0.98, nearly complete suppression of fumonisin accumulation was noted (control vs MCFA-treated feed (p < 0.01): FB1 115.12 ± 5.87 ppm (dry weight) vs 2.26 ± 0.94 ppm ; FB2 38.21 ± 3.51 ppm vs 3.23 ± 1.45 ppm). The results could not be repeated with the swine feed, most probably due to the different composition of the feeds, especially their fat and carbohydrate content. Nevertheless, the results warrant further research since they are in line with previous reports of MCFA peroxisome-inducing activity leading to destruction of certain mycotoxins. Possibilities of development of feed formulations resistant to accumulation of fumonisins and other mycotoxins may also be explored.
